Estimates combine Social Security birth records (1880–2024) weighted by survival to today with Census Bureau surname shares, assuming first and last names pair independently. Counts cover US-born, SSN-registered residents, so treat the number as a well-informed floor, not a headcount.

How it works

The estimate multiplies two public datasets together. The first is the Social Security Administration's baby-name file, which records how many babies received each first name every year since 1880 (any name given to at least five babies in a year makes the file). We weight each birth-year cohort by the odds of still being alive today, using survival rates in line with the SSA's own life tables, and sum the years to estimate how many people with your first name are living right now. The second is the Census Bureau's surname file from the 2010 count, which lists every last name held by 100 or more people and what share of the population carries it.

Worked example: the records show about 3.1 million living Americans named James, counting both the men it was mostly given to and the small number of women. Smith belongs to roughly 828 of every 100,000 Americans, or about 1 person in 121. Multiply the two and you get about 26,000 people named James Smith. The same arithmetic on a rarer pairing, say Beatrix Delgado, quickly lands under one person, which is the tool's polite way of saying you are probably it.

The one big assumption is independence: we treat first names and surnames as if they pair randomly. In reality they don't, quite. First names travel with culture, region, and generation, and so do surnames, so a José Hernández is more common than pure independence predicts and a Sven Hernandez rarer. For most names the estimate lands close; for names strongly tied to one community, read it as a floor rather than a census.

Why does the tool say my name doesn't appear in the records?

The SSA file only includes a name when at least five babies received it in a given year, and the Census surname file cuts off below 100 bearers. If either name misses those bars, no estimate is possible, but the answer is still useful: a name that rare means you are very likely the only person with your exact combination in the country.

Does the count include immigrants?

Mostly not, and this is the main reason to treat the number as a floor. The baby-name file counts people born in the US (technically, Social Security registrations at birth), so someone who immigrated as an adult usually isn't in the first-name math. Surname shares come from the full Census, so they do reflect the whole population. For names common among recent immigrants, the true count runs meaningfully higher than the estimate.

Why is the number different from what howmanyofme.com used to say?

Different assumptions. Older tools scaled name shares up to the full US population, immigrants included, which produces bigger numbers from the same records. We stick to what the data directly supports (US-born, survival-weighted) and say so, which yields a smaller but more defensible figure. Neither is an official count; the government publishes name records, not name totals.

Is my search stored?

No. The lookup happens in your browser against static data files served from our site, the same way an image loads. The names you type are never sent to a server or saved.
